Optical zoom — As seen in a magnifying glass, optical zoom uses optics to make an object appear closer. This produces images of higher quality and improves the image resolution.
Digital zoom — Digital zoom enlarges an image area by adding pixels to the image. Though the image will appear closer, the computer is actually adding information to your image. Image quality and resolution are degraded using digital zoom.
